Little O, Earth

Feeling your body move over the earth
where winged things flutter
at the base of the tree–give us

the high held note; the grace of the pasture animal,
unperturbed, its eloquent eyes,
the taste of dirt and grass in its mouth,

the yoke, the brand, the butcher’s block
not part of its mind; the gaiety of a small bird
or a blue field flower, alone or together with others,

swaying. Take us, not with derision,
but with the folly of adoration
for the odd nature in us.
